Skin Conditions Q&A
What are skin conditions?
Skin conditions are conditions that cause lesions or rashes to appear on the surface of your skin. Your skin acts as a protective covering over your entire body.
Typically, it keeps bacteria and viruses from invading your body and causing you to get sick. However, certain bacteria and viruses can infect the skin. Other skin conditions are genetic.
It’s often difficult to tell one skin condition from another. At MAR Primary Care, your provider evaluates your skin and asks about the characteristics of the condition, including how long it lasts and if you’ve had similar symptoms before. After diagnosis, a treatment plan for your specific skin condition is created.
What are some common skin conditions?
There are many skin conditions. At MAR Primary Care, you can get treatment for the following common skin conditions and others:
Moles
Moles are dark spots that may or may not be raised above your skin’s surface. They’re usually asymptomatic, but changes in their features could indicate certain types of skin cancer.
Warts
Warts are growths on your skin that come from a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). They’re contagious and usually appear on your hands or feet.
Rashes
Rashes are changes in the color or texture of your skin and often involve irritation. Common rashes include rosacea and ringworm, a fungal infection causing itchy circular patches.
Eczema
Eczema is a common type of rash resulting in itchiness, inflammation, and redness. There are several types of eczema that your provider can discuss with you during your consultation.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition that appears in several forms. You may be asymptomatic for months or years between flare-ups. It results in itchy scaly patches across different areas of skin.
How are skin conditions treated?
Your skin condition treatment depends on the type of skin condition you have. For a rash or eczema, your provider at MAR Primary Care might prescribe a cream or ointment to relieve the inflammation. They tell you what the medication contains and how to apply it effectively.
For moles, warts, and other growths, you may have the option to remove them with minor in-office surgery. Your provider discusses your options after examining the condition. If your provider is concerned about a mole, they might recommend a biopsy to test it for precancerous or cancerous tissue.
